Too often youth from vulnerable communities see themselves talked about in academic research, but are rarely involved as co-researchers or co-authors of research. The purpose of this article is to share our reflections on engaging youth, their experiences and their perspectives on the multi-levels of impact of participatory action research methodologies, such as community-based action research or youth participatory action research. This article discusses more broadly how our participatory methodologies have impacted our co-researchers and ourselves. In it, we provide additional details about our past research projects, as well as theorizing those details in terms of how critical theory serves as a tool within participatory methodologies. We reflect on the experiences engaging participatory methodologies in two different contexts and examine the collective impacts, comparing and contrasting the findings. We draw on our field research: one researcher worked with co-researchers from Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, and the other worked alongside youth co-researchers from an alternative secondary school in the USA. Two of our co-authors are also co-researchers, and they offer a deeper insight into how these methodologies impacted their lives.

Self-regulated learning (SRL) skills are crucial to improving learner achievement, to supporting effective lifelong learning, and to developing the capability to overcome learning difficulties arising from a disadvantaged environment. However, only a few South African studies address the development of SRL skills of secondary school learners. By means of participatory action research (PAR), this study aimed to foster SRL of Grade 10 learners in a selected secondary school in an underprivileged urban environment. An intervention programme consisting of 10 action research cycles was implemented with 35 learners over the course of 10 weeks. The study implemented quantitative and qualitative data collection methods using a study skills inventory, learner diaries, weekly class discussions and interviews. A statistically significant improvement in learners' SRL skills, time management, attitudes, motivation and certain cognitive strategies was observed and reported by learners. However, a key finding was that additional support was needed to improve learners' meta-cognitive skills.

The participatory learning and action: PLA was the process used for empowering in this program. This process has four steps: 1) create awareness, 2) specify problems or needs, 3) act and 4) present and reflect or monitor. The purposes of this study were: 1) to investigate the conditions of communities in terms of context and problems or needs in educational management in their secondary schools 2) to develop community empowerment program and 3) to examine the results of each program in 4 empowerment levels: individual level, team level, organization level and community level. The research was carried out with two teams: a 19-member Ban-chiang community team; 19 subjects and a 17-member Thung-fon community team. These 36 participants were chosen using a purposive sampling technique that led to outcomes of 4 empowerment levels in every indicator. This program, therefore, should be supported and promoted in order to empower them and create sustainability.

The Practice of a Quality Assurance System in Open and Distance Learning: A Case Study at Universitas Terbuka Indonesia (The Indonesia Open University)
The Practice of a Quality Assurance System in Open and Distance Learning: A Case Study at Universitas Terbuka Indonesia (The Indonesia Open University)

Quality assurance for distance higher education is one of the main concerns among institutions and stakeholders today. This paper examines the experiences of Universitas Terbuka (UT), which has initiated and implemented an innovative strategy of quality assurance (QA) for continuous improvement. The credo of the UT quality assurance system is "We write what we do. We do what we write. We check. We improve continuously!" Implementing a quality management system at the UT, a mega-university with a student body of more than a quarter of a million and which involved a network of participating institutions and regional centers, was a formidable task to accomplish. To achieve its lofty goal, UT adopted and contextualized the draft of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) QA Framework to launch its own quality assurance program. This has taken a great deal of commitment and participation of all staff involved. QA at the UT required systematic and step-by-step processes, including development of the QA framework and job manuals, raising awareness and commitment amongst all staff involved, internal assessment, and integration of QA programs into the university's annual action plans, external assessment and benchmarking. This paper concludes that quality assurance must be developed as institutional policy and strategy for continuous improvement.
